On August 10, 2026, at 7:34 a.m. local time, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia. The epicenter was located near San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó. The quake was felt across a large part of the country.
It caused severe damage in Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, and other cities: building collapses, at least six airports affected, damage to landmark infrastructure, hospitals evacuated, and thousands of homes damaged. Authorities report more than 100 deaths, hundreds of injured people, and missing persons, figures that continue to be updated.
The government has declared a national disaster, activated a unified command post in San José del Palmar, and deployed the army, firefighters, and rescue teams to the affected areas. More than 20 aftershocks have been recorded, including one with a magnitude of 4.8.
